Coach Cathey feels fortunate to be leading this prestigious athletic program. He believes in hard work, discipline, and integrity, and looks to instill a work ethic in these young men that will stay with them long after their basketball playing days are over. Coach Cathey’s motto is very simple. No excuses. Get the job done. Play with a maximum effort and give your very best in all that you do, both on and off the court.
He states: “What is important is that these young men learn a vast array of lessons here and remember this as a positive experience. I have yet to coach an NBA player. But I have coached a ton of guys who have gone to college on a basketball scholarship, guys who have gone on to be husbands, fathers, employees, and productive members of society. Of course we as coaches have a duty to teach these young men everything we can about the game of basketball, about teamwork, and about how to win. But we must also instill in these young men an ability to form a positive self-image. We must teach them to learn and win at the game of life through the game of basketball, hard work, and discipline.”
Coach Cathey began his coaching career in 1999 at First Assembly Christian School with the freshman boys basketball program. The team won the M.P.S.A. regional championship that year. After one year as an assistant, he became the head coach and lead the Crusaders to a 3rd place finish in the M.P.S.A. regionals.
Coach Cathey began coaching at Central High School in 2002. He was the assistant varsity coach and head J-V coach at Central for 3 years. During his tenure at Central, the varsity boys at Central reached the Region 8AAA semifinals 2 out of the 3 years he was there. The Central Warriors sent players to all different levels of college on basketball scholarships, from Division I to N.A.I.A. to junior college, and most recently one of Coach Cathey's former players, Lester Hudson, was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 2nd round of the NBA Draft.
Coach Cathey was the head coach of an A.A.U. team in the summer of 2005, the Memphis Tigers. The Tigers had a very successful summer, winning the Y.B.O.A. and A.A.U. Tennessee state tournaments while accumulating a 49-10 overall record. The Tigers went to the Y.B.O.A. national championship tournament in Tampa, FL and finished as the 3rd ranked team in the nation respectively, narrowly missing a chance at the national championship. The Tigers also went to the A.A.U. national championship tournament in Orlando, FL and placed 10th in the nation in that tournament.
Coach Cathey began coaching at Houston in 2005. He held the head J-V and assistant varsity coaching positions at Houston for 3 years prior to being named Program Director and Head Varsity Coach in 2008, and during that time learned a great deal and coached some really great student/athletes. The 2008-2009 season was Coach Cathey's first year as the head varsity coach. During this season, the Mustangs showed an improved record from the previous year, were far more competitive in every game, and challenged some of the perennial powerhouses of basketball in this city, narrowly missing scoring some major upsets. He looks forward to returning for his 2nd year as head varsity coach and continuing to build a program here at Houston that has a tradition of winning.
